What To Expect

  • You might wish to schedule an initial, one-hour consultation session with the clinician. Together, you and the clinician can discuss your questions and concerns and determine an appropriate direction for assessment, intervention, or preventative care. There is no obligation to continue. Referrals to other providers will also be provided to assist you as needed.

    What does an evaluation involve?

The first step in an evaluation is a parent consultation, where we discuss your concerns you have about your child. Based on the information you provide and the questions you want to be answered, a specific plan is designed for your child's evaluation.

The next step is testing, which is a series of one to three sessions several hours in length, during which your child completes many different kinds of tasks. These interactive tasks are designed to find out the unique ways that your child thinks, processes, and learns. The day of testing is a lot like a day of school for your child. He or she will be asked to do many different activities, depending on your child's age and your questions.

After testing, we'll have a feedback session. During this face-to-face conversation, you will be given personalized information about your child's profile and specific recommendations to maximize their potential. You'll have ample time to ask questions. During our meeting, we'll give you a "road map" of where you are now, where you're headed, and how to best get there.

Later, we will send you a full, written report detailing all the test results and recommendations.

What should I tell my child about the evaluation?

We recommended telling the child they are coming to see a specialist who can help figure out how to help them be as happy and healthy as possible. In order to do that we will ask a lot of questions and do a lot of activities. Some of the activities might seem like schoolwork, and some things might be new and even interesting. It is also important that your child has a good night’s sleep and eats a filling meal before they arrive, so they are well-rested and not hungry during their assessment. Be sure your child brings or wears their glasses if needed, and continues to take medication as prescribed. Bring any relevant previous medical or school records to your first appointment.

  • We require at least 48 hours notice prior to canceling an appointment. Because we offer appointment reminders and might have a waiting list, missed appointments that are not canceled with a 48-hour advance notice will incur a charge to your credit card on file, as outlined in the Patient Services Agreement.

If you do not complete the Initial Intake Packet in advance of your first appointment, or if you arrive more than 15 minutes past your scheduled appointment time, your session time will be shortened accordingly, or you will incur a charge.
