What To Expect

Overview:

Our testing sessions vary depending on the age and needs of the individual! They may occur in one morning session of 2 to 3 hours OR occur in several sessions over the course of several days. If a full day of testing is used, this simulates a full day of school, except with more direct engagement and opportunities for rest.

Testing is done in increments with short breaks in between. On the breaks, we encourage you both to get fresh air, and play, relax and clear the mind. Please bring hydration and snacks. During testing, some of the tasks may be easy, and others may be more difficult, and new. Each task is a short burst, with many short tasks making up the day. Activities are varied. Some are game-like, others more like schoolwork.

What It Looks Like:

A portion of our lobby is pictured above.  It is a quiet and comfortable space with snacks, toys and games, as well as couches, chairs and tables where parents can work, read a book or rest while their child is testing one on one in our doctor’s offices.  Like our lobby, each doctor’s office is a comfortable and peaceful space, designed to allow for maximum focus and minimal distractions.

How to Prepare for Testing:

The best preparation is a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast.  If your child has questions about their appointment(s) and specifically “why”, ask your doctor for guidance in how to frame that for them in a developmentally appropriate way.

The overarching goal is that the time your family spends with us at CENTER helps you (and them!) to understand how best to support them as they grow.  Framing the testing in a positive manner should help to put them at ease.  Our doctors make a concerted effort to build rapport with your child from the start, which is crucial to get the best out of them during testing. Many children report they enjoy their experience and find it fun and interesting!
